Full-Year Elementary Writing Curriculum – Grades 1-5 Bundle

UNITS INCLUDED IN ELEMENTARY WRITING CURRICULUM

This full-year elementary writing curriculum bundle includes the following units:

• Unit 1: Introduction to Writing This 2-week unit includes 10 lessons that introduce students to “writing workshop”, the “6 traits of writing”, and the “writing process” as they write a narrative about a topic of their choice.
• Unit 2 : Personal Narrative This 7-week unit includes 35 lessons that guide students through the writing process for 2 personal narratives.
• Unit 3: Realistic Fiction This 7-week unit includes 35 lessons that guide students through the writing process for 2 realistic fiction narratives.
• Unit 4: Informational Writing This 7-week unit includes 35 lessons that guide students through the writing process for 2 informational reports.
• Unit 5: Opinion/Persuasive Writing This 7-week unit includes 35 lessons that guide students through the writing process for 2 opinion essays.

MATERIALS INCLUDED IN ELEMENTARY WRITING CURRICULUM

This elementary writing curriculum has everything you need to teach 30 weeks of writing lessons:

1. Lessons Plans: Includes daily lesson plans (30 weeks worth) that guide students through the writing process for 9 total writing assignments. Each lesson plan uses the “writing workshop” model and includes a mini-lesson, student writing time, and sharing time.
2. Mentor Texts: Includes a list of mentor texts that are used to showcase writing strategies for each unit. YouTube read-alouds of the mentor texts are available.
3. Posters: Includes attractive writing posters (both color and black/white options) that are used to display key information and writing strategies taught in the mini-lessons.
4. Graphic Organizers: Includes graphic organizers that students use to plan their writing in the prewriting stage.
5. Writing Paper: Includes printable writing paper that students use for drafting and publishing their writing.
6. Writing Samples: Includes sample graphic organizers and drafts that teachers can use for modeling.
7. Rubrics: Includes rubrics for each unit to assess students’ final drafts using the 6+1 traits of writing: ideas, organization, voice, word choice, sentence fluency, conventions, and presentation.
8. Conferencing Forms: Includes a conferencing schedule and conferencing forms to use for daily writing conferences with students.
9. Book of Words: Includes a “Book of Words” that students can use to record the spelling of new words.
10. Bonus Materials: Includes extra posters and graphic organizers that can be used to supplement and differentiate this curriculum. Also includes a 5-day grammar lesson on action verbs.

A Typical Daily Writing Workshop

1. Mini-lesson and Modeling (10-20 minutes): Each lesson begins with a mini-lesson where students are taught a writing strategy with the use of mentor texts and posters. Then the teacher models the writing strategy in their own writing. 
2. Writing Time (15-30 minutes): Students apply the strategy from the mini-lesson into their own writing. 
3. Sharing Time (5-10 minutes):  Students share a piece of their writing from the day with a partner or the class.
